7.6 PROPORTION OF INFECTED CHILDREN IN
SELECTED DISTRICTS

The proportion of infected children in rural and urban areas of selected districts, in the four zones are presented in tables 7.6.1 - 7.6.4 (The confidence intervals in all districts were very narrow, hence not presented). These proportions were estimated as explained in the statistical methods, with the purpose of estimating the prevalence of infection in the rural and urban strata of the respective zones. These estimates may not be adequate enough to reflect on the epidemiological situation of TB at the district level (this was however not the objective of the study). However, in some of the districts, the number of test read children were much higher than anticipated due to low proportions of children with BCG scar. Therefore, the proportion of infected children largely reflect on the disease situation in some of the districts as under:

North zone - rural areas of Rae Bareli, Hardoi and Jaunpur districts.

West zone - rural areas of Junagadh, Nagpur, Rathnagiri, Thane and Kota districts, and urban areas of Thane and Nagpur districts.

The number of test read children in the rural and urban areas of other districts does not permit to draw any conclusion regarding the disease situation for the districts per se. It may also be emphasized that the adopted sampling methodology does not permit to club the rural and urban estimates in individual districts to find out the over all estimate for the district.
