The paper is based on the writer's experience in
working as a medical social worker in a sanatorium in a metropolitan
area and covering three years, 1947-1950. It examines the ways by
which social service meets the problems of adult TB patients. Representative
case situations are presented to illustrate the role of medical
social work in assisting the doctor and in helping patients accept
the medical program prescribed for them. The second part of this
paper is presented in the succeeding summary.
