The paper is based on the writer's experience in
working as a medical social worker in a sanatorium in a metropolitan
area and covering three years, 1947-1950. It examines the ways by
which social service meets the problems of adult TB patients. Representative
case situations are presented to illustrate the role of medical
social work in assisting the doctor and in helping patients accept
the medical program prescribed for them. The second part of this
paper is presented in the succeeding summary.

This segment, a continuation of the paper studying
the role of medical social service in a TB Sanatorium (see previous
summary for details), focuses on the economic aspects pertaining
to TB patients. Representative case situations highlight the financial
burden faced by TB patients and, indicate how two families solved
their financial problems in different ways. The need for various
community agencies to take responsibility in minimizing the impact
of TB on children is also discussed in detail.
